Back in beautiful San Diego, soaking up the perfect weather while leading another hands-on photography workshop! There’s just something special about teaching in this city — the light, the energy, and the creativity that comes alive every time we get behind the camera. This time, I had the pleasure of working with a fantastic group of six enthusiastic students — five shooting with Canon cameras and one with a Sony. Each came in with their own goals and challenges, from learning the basics to preparing for exciting upcoming trips where they hope to capture unforgettable images.
Throughout the day, we dove deep into the fundamentals of photography. Together, we explored how to truly understand and master the creative modes of their cameras — including Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and, of course, full Manual Mode. These camera classes are designed to help students move beyond Auto Mode and gain the confidence to make creative decisions on their own. Watching them gradually understand exposure, depth of field, and motion control — and then apply those skills in real shooting scenarios — is always rewarding.
There’s nothing quite like seeing that moment when it all “clicks,” and students realize they can finally take full control of their camera settings. From composing better shots to using natural light effectively, everyone left with a new level of confidence and excitement for photography.
